We have a rich history of eye health innovation, our research and industry knowledge created powerhouse developments such as the birth of silicone hydrogel contact lenses. Innovations such as these gave us a platform to bring eye health to those in need, and look to the future to develop the next generation of eye health devices.

Product Development

First 30 day continuous wear contact lens
The silicone hydrogel polymer, released by CIBA VISION as the Focus® Night & Day™ contact lens in 1999. These were the lenses to be approved by US FDA for 30 days of continuous wear. This new class of material now accounts for more than 50 % of the soft contact lens market globally and is projected to accrue around $25 billion in sales in the 20 years since their release.
Soft toric lenses for astigmatism
Soft toric contact lenses for the correction of astigmatism were co-developed with Ocular Sciences Inc (now CooperVision) and were successfully launched worldwide in 2002 as the Biomedics Toric lens. It is projected that these lenses will accrue around $6 billion in sales in the 20 years since their release.
Multifocal contact lenses for correction of presbyopia
Multifocal soft contact lens for correction of presbyopia launched by CIBA VISION in February 2009 as the AIR OPTIX™ AQUA MULTIFOCAL contact lenses. It is projected that these lenses will accrue around $6 billion in sales in the 20 years since their release.
Spectacle lenses for myopia
We co-developed the MyoVision™ spectacle lens with industry partner Carl Zeiss Vision, released in 2010. The spectacle lens has demonstrated an ability to slow the progress of myopia by 30 % in children 6 to 12 years of age, where the child has a certain history of parental myopia.

  • 1972 - Comfortable, well performing daily wear hydrogel spherical and toric lens (Zero 6 Hydron).
  • 1973 - Determined endothelial response to contact lens wear.
  • 1975 - Extended wear soft lenses, co-designed Permalens and Permaflex extended wear soft contact lenses.
  • 1983 - The first centre-distance and centre-near soft bifocal combination for treating presbyopia with concentric bifocal contact lenses (CooperVision).
  • 1984 to 1994 - Methods developed for the definition of the oxygen needs of the eye; methods of using and screening extended wear lenses which led to high Dk Silicone Hydrogel lenses (CIBA VISION, Bausch & Lomb).
  • 1991 to 2015 - Surgical and imaging technology – Accommodating Gel; Intraoperative Autorefractor; Intraoperative Optical Coherence Tomography.
  • 2012 - Collaboration with Abbott Medical Optics (AMO) leading to the launch of AMO’s current dual-disinfectant multipurpose disinfecting solution.

Brien Holden Vision Institute has been collaborating with industry and research partners for more than four decades on the development of eye care products. We have been the lead partner in four Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs), a program established by the Australian Government to bring researchers and industry together on outcome-focused collaborative research. The CRCs were:
  • Cooperative Research Centre for Eye Research and Technology (CRCERT) - 1991 to 1997
  • CRCERT 2 - 1997 to 2003
  • Vision Cooperative Research Centre (Vision CRC) - 2003 to 2010
  • Vision CRC 2 - 2010 to 2015
These CRCs produced eye care products which have so far generated over $300 million in royalties for partner organisations. They have also helped establish long-standing links between Brien Holden Vision Institute and world leading research organisations such as:
  • Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami (rated the number one eye hospital in the U.S.)
  • LV Prasad Eye Institute (one of the leading comprehensive eye care centres in India and a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Prevention of Blindness)
  • University of Houston College of Optometry (U.S.)
  • Zhongshan Ophthalmic Centre at Sun-yat Sen University (the major provider of advanced eye care in China, integrating teaching, eye research and blindness prevention activities)
Postgraduate education
Educated almost 200 PhD and MSc students
In March 2015, Brien Holden Vision Institute hosted the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Scientific Meeting on Myopia, bringing together leading scientists, researchers and clinicians from each WHO region.

Experts in myopia representing each WHO region attended the meeting and contributed to the final report. The meeting reviewed the magnitude of myopia, vision impairment and blindness in myopia, terminology and classification, pathological consequences, the impact on society, aetiology, risk factors, and evidence for myopia control.
