ICEE Sunnies for Sight Day February 27, 2009

ICEE Sunnies for Sight Day is about recognising the 670 million people, globally, who are blind or vision impaired simply because they do not have access to an eye examination and a pair of glasses.

People suffering from vision problems are more likely to be excluded from basic education, suffer from isolation and have fewer employment opportunities. Good vision allows children to learn at school and adults to provide for their families. There is a direct and immediate often life changing, benefit when a person’s vision is restored!

1 billion people with presbyopia: half a billion without glasses

All of us will experience deteriorating sight as we get older. By the age of 45, the lens in our eyes will start to lose its elasticity, affecting our ability to focus on near objects – usually meaning we need reading glasses. This is called presbyopia.

A comprehensive study, published in the December issue of the academic journal Archives of Ophthalmology, estimates that 1.04 billion people in the world experience vision impairment caused by presbyopia. The research, undertaken by Professor Brien Holden, CEO of the International Centre for Eyecare Education (ICEE), and colleagues, not only provides the first comprehensive global estimate of the extent of presbyopia.

In less than ten years ICEE has worked in more than 40 countries to develop sustainable eye care systems. Today in South Africa, ICEE is implementing breakthrough programmes to give people sight.

Unfortunately in many regions of South Africa the lack of eye care services and the high cost of private optometry services make an eye examination and a pair of glasses inaccessible. For many people the involvement of ICEE in the community is their first experience with optometry services.
