Grandparents with A Grand Vision

Imagine not being able to read clearly, watch your grandchildren play or be able to see 10 steps in front of you simply because you didn’t have a pair of glasses.

This is the reality for many people in countries like East Timor - the world’s newest nation yet now officially Asia’s poorest country.

In Australia, we visit an optometrist, have an eye examination and can purchase a pair of glasses. However, in many developing countries there are little or no eye care services in place - and glasses are either too expensive or simply not available. For example, Australia has over 3,000 optometrists, yet in East Timor, with a population of nearly one million, there are none.

“A 70 year old man presented to our clinic with blurred near vision. He had brought a children’s story book with him and I learnt that he wanted to be able to see clearly to read to his grandchildren. This was his first eye examination and he had never worn glasses before. I examined his eyes and found that he had good distance vision with a mild correction, and was able to see clearly at near with an age-appropriate near addition. I gave him +3.00 reading glasses and he was very happy that he could now read the stories in his book. He was quite proud of his new glasses and told me that he would treasure them.”

"A 56 year old lady came in complaining of poor distance and near vision. She had never had an eye test, leading her to do less near work, such as sewing, in more recent years. I prescribed two pairs of glasses.

This beautiful grandmother of seven could not stop smiling as she wore her new pair of glasses.”
